Background of the Study
Economic hardship, characterized by poverty, unemployment, and low-income status, has long been linked to a range of mental health challenges. In Nigeria, the persistent economic difficulties faced by low-income earners exacerbate stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders. In Kebbi State, a predominantly rural area, poverty rates are notably high, with many individuals relying on subsistence farming or low-wage jobs for their livelihoods. The state's limited access to healthcare facilities, combined with the cultural stigma surrounding mental health issues, has led to inadequate mental health support for those most affected by economic hardship. Studies have shown that financial strain and job insecurity can lead to mental health conditions, especially among individuals with limited access to social safety nets (Smith & Johnson, 2023). A lack of affordable healthcare services and limited mental health awareness contribute to this growing problem. With the economic challenges faced by low-income earners in Kebbi State, it is essential to investigate how economic hardship directly impacts mental well-being. This research seeks to understand the relationship between economic stress and mental health outcomes in low-income populations, with a focus on providing actionable solutions to improve mental health services in the region.
Statement of the Problem
In Kebbi State, the rising levels of economic hardship have a direct impact on the mental health of low-income earners. Despite the availability of some community health programs, the state’s limited mental health services have not effectively addressed the psychological impacts of economic hardship. Many individuals face financial difficulties that manifest as stress, anxiety, and depression, yet they remain untreated due to a lack of access to appropriate mental health care. Additionally, social stigma surrounding mental health further discourages individuals from seeking help. The existing health systems are ill-equipped to respond to the growing demand for mental health services in the context of economic hardship. This study aims to fill the gap in understanding how economic hardship influences mental health among low-income earners in Kebbi State and to identify opportunities for improving mental health care in economically disadvantaged communities.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the relationship between economic hardship and mental health among low-income earners in Kebbi State.
2. To assess the availability and accessibility of mental health services for low-income earners in Kebbi State.
3. To explore the coping mechanisms employed by low-income earners to manage economic-related mental health challenges.
Research Questions
1. What is the relationship between economic hardship and mental health disorders among low-income earners in Kebbi State?
2. How accessible and available are mental health services for low-income earners in Kebbi State?
3. What coping mechanisms do low-income earners use to manage mental health challenges caused by economic hardship?
Research Hypotheses
1. Low-income earners in Kebbi State experience higher rates of mental health disorders due to economic hardship.
2. Access to mental health services in Kebbi State is limited for low-income earners.
3. Coping mechanisms such as community support and informal mental health interventions are frequently employed by low-income earners to manage economic-related mental health challenges.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on low-income earners in Kebbi State, particularly those in rural and semi-urban areas. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions. Limitations may include potential biases in self-reported data, as well as challenges related to accessing rural communities due to geographical constraints.
